NASDAQ was founded in 1971 and began trading on February 8, 1971, it was the world's first electronic stock market. NASDAQ was also the first stock market in the United States to start trading online.

History

The Nasdaq Stock Exchange is the second-largest exchange in the world by market capitalization, behind only the New York Stock Exchange. The exchange platform is owned by Nasdaq, Inc. which also owns the Nasdaq Nordic (formerly known as OMX) and Nasdaq Baltic stock market network and several other US stock and options exchanges.

In 1998, Nasdaq became the first stock market in the US to trade online, using the slogan "the stock market for the next hundred years."
